Nathan “Nate” Woods has always been someone who cares deeply about his community. His career has always been rooted in service and mentorship, spending nearly three decades working with youth at his local community center in Nebraska. In 2017, Nate transitioned from youth to workforce development where he assisted job seekers in finding career resources, resume development, interview preparation and more. Nate retired in 2021, but soon discovered he was eager to return to work.
Unfortunately, an injury impacted his mobilization, making it difficult for Nate to find the right fit for his next work opportunity. Nate says, “I got a scooter and that’s when I knew I needed to start thinking seriously about what’s next.” In his previous career within the workforce development industry, he had learned about the Senior Community Service Employment Program (SCSEP) and decided he would give it a try. Nate connected with National Able Network’s Lincoln, Nebraska office and was quickly accepted into SCSEP!
As a SCSEP participant and active job seeker, Nate hit the ground running—doing outreach, connecting with the community, and even helping his peers enroll in SCSEP. But his real goal was always to get back to work! Just a few months into the program, Nate got that chance. National Able Network’s Business Services Team coordinated a brand-new On-the-Job Experience (OJE) opportunity with Forward Thinking, an organization that supports individuals who are reintegrating into society post-incarceration. Forward Thinking was looking for someone with Nate’s skills – it was the perfect match!
Of his new role, Nate says, “I check in with people, help them with resumes, make sure they’re following the rules…It feels good to be doing meaningful work again, and this opportunity—it really set me back on a path I feel good about.”
When reflecting on SCSEP, Nate highlights the unique support it provides for older adults looking to re-enter the workforce. “There’s no pressure—it’s paced just right,” he explains. “You get coaching, training, and a chance to regain your balance. But you’ve got to apply yourself. If you do, it works. It’s a great program that’s helped me and could help so many others.”
If you, or someone you know, is 55 years of age (or better!) and is interested in getting back to work, visit www.NationalAble.org/SCSEP for more information.
