Across Omaha, nonprofits are doing important work every day, but much of it happens independently. Betty McKernan, Business Service Representative at National Able Network, saw an opportunity to change that.

Betty recently launched a nonprofit networking initiative focused on an idea: when organizations are more connected, they can better support the communities they serve. Instead of working separately, this effort creates space for collaboration, shared knowledge, and stronger partnerships.

The first meeting, held earlier this year, brought together five organizations: Dynamic Inc., Mosaic, Noah Clinic, Quality Living Inc., and Stephen Center. It was a strong starting point that highlighted the value of getting people in the same room. Each group had the chance to share what they do, creating a clearer picture of the resources available across the community.

Since then, Betty and other attendees have expanded their outreach, inviting a range of organizations including workforce partners, shelters, and food banks. The goal is to grow participation and build a network that organizations and community members can rely on.

At its core, the initiative is about creating a system where nonprofits can support one another through referrals, shared events, and collaboration. As those connections grow, so does the ability to connect individuals to jobs, training, and essential services.

Nonprofit organizations in Omaha offer valuable services and bringing team members from these organizations together helps elevate awareness of available resources and opportunities.

The meetings are intentionally simple for now, focused on building relationships through in-person connection. Over time, the group may expand into joint events, job fairs, and broader community efforts.
