We’ve all heard the phrase before: Follow Your Passion. For LaTanya Rapp, she was able to follow her passion twice, blazing a new career in the healthcare industry after a successful career as a baker. LaTanya began working at a young age and was one of those lucky individuals who had a natural “knack” for cooking. This first passion gave her the opportunity to become a business owner. After many years of success with her baking company, LaTanya’s mother fell ill with Alzheimer’s, and she closed her business to care for her mother.

Her mother’s illness inspired a new passion in the healthcare industry. LaTanya began her new career helping individuals with developmental disabilities. To advance in the healthcare industry, LaTanya knew she would have to participate in training, so she started exploring her options when she was faced with new setbacks: her husband was laid off from his job and going back to school was no longer affordable.

Despite her challenges, LaTanya remained determined and she turned to National Able Network’s Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA) program for help. With the help and support of Career Coach Cheryl Travis, LaTanya enrolled in a medical billing and coding program at Rasmussen College. “Being part of the program helped me stay on track and know that I am able to fulfill all of my goals as a result,” LaTanya said.

LaTanya is currently employed at Franciscan Health in Chicago Heights and she is pursuing her studies in the health information management field.

We are so proud of you, LaTanya!
