LaKeshia Jackson’s childhood dream was to become a nurse. At 25 years old, she already had a head start working as a Certified Nursing Assistant. However, LaKeshia wanted to take the next step in her career path and decided to continue her education to earn her state nursing certification. As the eldest of three children, LaKeshia also wanted to set a good example for her younger sisters, so she began taking the steps to advance her education and find her dream job!

While applying to schools, LaKeshia realized she needed some guidance on how to get started. She discovered National Able Network at Prairie State College and enrolled in the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA) program. With assistance from WIOA and guidance from her Career Coach Katrina Johnson, LaKeshia enrolled at the Coalition of African American Nurses (CAAN) Academy of Nursing.  Going back to school was not without challenges, but LaKeshia took them in stride and studied hard. Her hard work and determination paid off when she received her nursing degree with her Career Coach, Katrina, in attendance.

“When I was in a tough position at school, I had my Career Coach there on my side supporting me. I invited her to my graduation because she was so supportive. She said encouraging words, and she was very friendly and helpful. She was a good support system!” said LaKeshia.

LaKeshia was offered a position from The Victory Center upon completion of her state board exam, which she plans to take before the end of the year. In the meantime, LaKeshia is focused on studying for the board exam and looking forward to her new future! “I look forward to helping and giving back to my community,” LaKeshia said. “Every person that I come into contact with, I want to help them.”
