Randall “Randy” Spiess’s professional experiences encompass an array of expertise – from software engineer to business development consultant and many specializations in between. As a professional heavily submerged and experienced within the tech industry, his path to CareerPlace was quite a journey.

Equipped with a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, Randy was hired at Motorola, where he worked for 20 years. He quickly navigated his way up the ranks, earning a Master’s in Business Administration (MBA) along the way. However, Motorola faced some challenging times and they decided to sell part of the company. Unfortunately this led to 140 employees being laid off, and Randy happened to be one of them. It was during this period that Randy continued to polish his ever expanding skill set. “I wore many different hats – quality manager, marketing manager, sales operations manager, and business development manager,” says Randy. Randy was looking for his next opportunity when he discovered CareerPlace, but Randy was skeptical. His skepticism would soon change to confidence.

“At CareerPlace I found people and classes that helped me refine my value proposition and I discovered an appreciation for networking,” says Randy, “Networking is a skill that I will take with me for the rest of my career, and one I wish I would’ve learned years ago.” When reflecting on the services that helped him the most, Randy is quick to mention the LinkedIn courses and digital job boards. Actually, it was through LinkedIn that Randy reached out to a hiring manager who went on to connect him to his current position as the Management Consultant for DevOps for CARA.

Pleased with his CareerPlace experience, Randy provides this sage advice job seekers: “Refine your elevator pitch, your value proposition, really focus in on what you want, and network. Talk to people about your value proposition, and prepare for your new job. Get a face to face interview, and prepare for it and go into it with the passion that you want it!”
