The Pursuit of Happiness in Your Career

On Independence Day, we celebrate the signing of the Declaration of Independence. Signed in 1776, this document is the foundation and essence of the truths and rights we believe in our nation. The phrase from the declaration that addresses one of the most important rights is: “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed…with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.”
Our forefathers declared we have the right to pursue happiness. Happiness in all aspects of our lives – personal and professional, but, happiness is quite subjective. Today we are happy to share some factors to consider when you’re a job seeker or looking for a career change in order to remain happy in your professional life:
- Align your career with your values. This is a tough one, but it is also extremely crucial: try to find work that aligns with your beliefs. This work values checklist could help organize your values and will help you to look for jobs that fit those values in order to increase your long-term happiness.
- Appreciate your work. Whatever the job, know this: your work matters. You are doing work that impacts others in some way – big or small. Meaning and purpose are highly correlated to happiness. Take some time each day to appreciate how important your work can be for others! Even job searching is work in itself, some consider it a full time job, so try not to get discouraged and remember that applying for jobs is purposeful work.
- Instill a positive work environment. Your work environment, which includes an array of factors, from your desk to the break room to even your relationships with your coworkers and supervisors all influence your mood and happiness. So, whether you decorate your desk to feel more comfortable or you set aside 5 minutes for meditation or you even buy yourself a goofy coffee mug – do what is in your power to have a positive work space. If you’re a job seeker, then this tidbit goes double for you! The more positivity you surround yourself with, the more motivation you have, which is always helpful.
