Employee Well-Being Month: How to Keep a Positive Mindset at Work
June 5, 2017 Non-profit, Workforce 0

Throughout the month of June (a.k.a Employee Well-Being Month), we will be featuring ways for employees to feel happy and healthy at work! This week, we are featuring ways to stay positive and stress-free in the workplace, which is not always easy! To get the scoop on how to stay upbeat in the office, we asked our resident happy-go-lucky co-worker and Senior Training Specialist, Fred Hairston, to weigh in on how he remains positive at work, and below are his top three tips!
1. Plan ahead. Studies show that planning can significantly reduce your stress levels. According to author, Robert Epstein, “Fighting stress before it even starts, planning things rather than letting them happen,” can help you stay calm and happy. Try planning your workday the night before, or better yet, plan the week ahead on Friday afternoon.
2. Provide excellent customer service. You may be thinking, “What if I don’t work in customer service?” Believe it or not, working with others, whether it be co-workers or customers, is still considered customer service! The first rule of customer service, whether it be internal or external, is that the customer is always right. If you approach your workday with the mindset that you are there to be as helpful as possible, we suspect that you will have a more enjoyable and more productive day!
3. Build your emotional intelligence. Emotional intelligence is a game changer when it comes to being successful (in mind and performance) at work! In some instances, emotional intelligence can help employees better cope with others, manage stress, and solve conflicts in the workplace. If you are interested in learning more about emotional intelligence and how it can help you in the office, Fred recommends reading Emotional Intelligence at Work by author Hendrie Weisinger, Ph.D.
Stay tuned throughout June for more tips and advice on how to stay happy and healthy!
