One in six Chicagoans rely on the Greater Chicago Food Depository for assistance, some of which are National Able Network clients.

September is Hunger Action Month, so last week a few Able staff members participated in volunteering at the Greater Chicago Food Depository! Able’s staff, along with other volunteers, packed a total of 20,682 pounds of food that will be distributed to food pantries across Chicago this week.

When we arrived at the Greater Chicago Food Depository, they gave us a brief introduction with facts about the organization and its mission, then we ventured into the packing rooms. Have you ever seen 10,520 pounds of sweet potatoes? Trust me when I say, it’s a lot! We took those sweet potatoes, placed them into bags, and packed them into three large boxes. We also packed corn, chicken salad, and 400 bags of healthy snacks for a local school.

Volunteering at the Greater Chicago Food Depository was a great way for our staff to come together to serve our local community in a different capacity. It promoted teamwork, bonding, and a some healthy competition.

During our session, we packed:

Chicken Salad……………..2,112 lbs

Healthy Kids Meals……..400 lbs (over 400 bags!)

Corn…………………………..4,050 lbs

Sweet Potatoes…………….10,520 lbs

TOTAL…………………..20,682 lbs
