Using Past Experience to Help Fellow Veterans Achieve Self-Sufficiency Through Employment
August 5, 2016 Training, Veterans Forward 0

United States Army National Guard veteran, Kevin Averyhart was at a veteran’s assistance facility when he saw a brochure for an organization that offered no-cost employment services for veterans. At first he considered not taking it, but since Kevin had recently earned his Masters Degree and was looking for a career, he decided to take action. A few days later, Kevin found himself at a career training workshop at National Able Network and began working with Veterans Forward Career Coach, Michelle Malone to get started on his career path.
Throughout his time with Veterans Forward, Kevin participated in Job Search Work Team, which allowed him to network and connect with other veterans whom were also looking for employment. According to Kevin, “[Job Search Work Team] gave me people to lean on in addition to my Career Coach. These people were going through the same thing as me. Sometimes you feel alone and it helps to bounce ideas off of other people.”
Through Kevin’s new network of connections in Job Search Work Team and through the Veterans Forward staff, he successfully found employment as a Case Manager at a local veteran organization, The Inner Voice, Inc. In his new role, Kevin assists homeless and at-risk Chicagoland veterans in achieving self-sufficiency through gainful employment! Kevin is grateful for the opportunity to assist other veterans in achieving their goals and he hopes to provide the same quality of guidance as he received while working with Veterans Forward.
According to Kevin, one of the best parts of working in his new career is the flexibility. As a Case Manager, Kevin has the flexibility to provide effective services to veterans and to pass on what he’s learned through Veterans Forward and Job Search Work Team. And of course, the best thing about his new career is the satisfaction that comes from seeing a fellow veteran successfully transition to a new career! At National Able Network, we know that satisfaction well.
Congratulations, Kevin!
