How to Make The Most of Your Summer Job Search with Social Media!

Summer is rapidly approaching and it’s the perfect time to get started on your job search! Typically, many people use the summer to take a break from their job search. This makes June through August the best time to get the jump on a period of lower competition for job openings and start finding and applying for jobs using social media!
For the most part, social media might only give us thoughts of endless scrolling and “Liking” of posts; however, social media can be a very successful tool in your job search. And it isn’t just LinkedIn – most social media sites have job search functionalities and resources that can help propel you into the workforce.
Below are a few tips that can get you started on your career path using social media:
- Let people know that you’re looking. Alert your social networks that you are looking for a job and be specific. If you’re looking for a job in marketing, make sure you let your family and friends know. You’ll be surprised at how many people will be able to connect you with the right person. (And remember: It’s not who you know, it’s who knows you.)
- LinkedIn, LinkedIn, LinkedIn! LinkedIn has become one of the best job search sites due to all of its amazing functionalities! LinkedIn not only allows you to feature your resume, recommendations and skill sets, it also has thousands of job listings that will tailor to your specific experience. (Pro-tip: Join as many relevant LinkedIn groups as possible. Many groups feature job listings and the opportunity to connect with individuals who work in your industry, or even individuals hiring in your industry. Pretty convenient, right?)
- Don’t be afraid to network on Facebook. Facebook has a bad reputation for being a social media site that can negatively affect your job search, but that’s not entirely true. Facebook can be a great way to reconnect with past colleagues, college friends, and others that can offer advice or job leads. Side note: If you think you have something on your Facebook page that may negatively affect your job search, make your profile private.
- Have a set schedule of when to conduct your job search. Staying accountable and disciplined in your job search throughout the summer can be hard, but it will pay off! Start by setting aside an hour per day to follow-up with jobs that you’ve applied for and to look for new job listings – no breaks or distractions. Treat your job search like a job.
