Testing My Career Path
December 17, 2015 IT Career Lab, Workforce 1

At some point in time, we all have to take a test. Whether it’s a test for school, being tested by your employer, or just a test in life – we are constantly being tested! And speaking of testing, did I mention that I’m the new Test Administrator for National Able Network (Able)?
I was first introduced to the proctor life after obtaining my undergrad degree last May. I needed additional income to further my education and I thought this position sounded like an interested opportunity field – which it proved to be! During my first job as an exam proctor, I had the opportunity to meet people from all over the world: people who were taking tests to become professionals in fields varying from Orthopedic Surgery to Civil Engineering. I even had the chance to proctor an exam for Christopher Gardner, the inspiration behind the movie The Pursuit of Happyness.
Even though it was great to meet new people at work, my favorite part of the job was being able to see people achieve their goals. I love seeing individuals who are testing go through a myriad of emotions: first nervous, then confident! My job was to make sure that each person is able to get to that level of confidence while testing by making sure that they are comfortable and they have a fair and valid testing experience.
I often get asked why I left a busy “mega-center” and came to Able. I tell them I chose to pack up for a few reasons. One being that the values of Able coincided with some of my own, and I chose Able because it makes its employees and clients feel like family. I picked up on the closeness of the workers at Able when I was going through my interview stage and even now I still feel that same family vibe.
Since I’ve been employed at Able, I have managed to expand on not only my proctoring skills, but also skills needed for the professional world. Two weeks ago, I proctored for the IT Career Lab students. It was a big deal to me because I would see them come in every other day for class preparing for the big exam. I wanted to make sure that everything went right for them because I saw firsthand all of the hard work they put in. When it comes to outside clients, I have also managed to build up my own little list of regulars who come to Able to take their exams. Those clients usually say they love the atmosphere here and which always makes me feel good because it’s a positive reflection of me and of Able. I have also been learning more about the services that Able provides its clients, such as resume building, networking skills and job resources. It has been a great two months so far and I am excited to see what my future with Able has in store for me!
Wonderful Katrina! We are happy that you are part of the team!
