The Challenge of Transferring Military Skills to Civilian Employment
February 13, 2015 Veterans Forward, Workforce 0

I started planning for my military-to-civilian transition years before separation. I knew it would be a challenging process, but I also believed that my military specialty – public affairs – would be more easily transferable than most. Coupled with my decade of experience in senior-level management, I knew finding a position was only a matter of putting myself out there.
Still, I decided to make myself even more marketable by earning an MBA in Human Resources and a Senior Professional in Human Resources certification before taking off the uniform. With my military skills translated into a quality civilian resume, and a closet full of newly-tailored suits, I expected to take the civilian hiring world by storm.
What I didn’t expect, however, was that my decision to serve in the military for 22 years would ultimately be detrimental to landing a civilian job. I didn’t expect total silence. I was over-qualified for entry level positions, and didn’t have enough civilian experience to work in upper management. Many organizations I met had a shared desire to hire veterans…just not this kind of veteran.
Throughout the process, I maintained a positive attitude, knowing the right situation was out there for me. When I got a call from National Able Network, I knew that situation had arrived. As the new Director of Veterans Programs, I have the chance to make finding a job smoother for the next veteran than it was for me. I have a chance to make a difference on an individual basis. The Veterans Forward team is committed to helping those who gave so much in the defense of our nation. For me personally, I have the opportunity to continue in the spirit of service like I have for the past two-plus decades. Only now I get to grow my hair out a little.
