Boss’s Day – The Good, the Bad, the Mediocre….
October 16, 2014 Training, Uncategorized, Workforce 1

When I was asked to submit this blog, I thought “Oh boy, I’m going to have to be politically correct – aren’t I? Here goes…
The majority of my career was spent in the For-Profit industry and now more recently in the Non-Profit world. I’ve had many, many, many bosses in the For-Profit world (30 + at one company) and no, I’m not a job hopper! Some have been very good and of course others have been somewhat mediocre. Have I ever had a “bad” boss – luckily, I’ve only had a couple. One thing I can say about every single one of my bosses is that I’ve learned from them all, the good, the bad and the mediocre. I learned to emulate or develop positive behaviors and leadership qualities from the GREAT ones, to treat people with respect and dignity in every interaction. We all know what makes up a bad boss and, I’ve even learned what not to do or how not to behave from the two I’ve had. What can you learn from a mediocre boss? I’ve learned the importance of respecting and partnering with colleagues, developing decision making skills and taking up the reigns of leadership when necessary!
So why do we celebrate our managers on Boss’s Day? Is it just another Hallmark holiday? Probably, but in many ways it’s so much more.
- Bosses are people too and like us, they need to “hear” when they are doing well.
- Great Bosses are actually “Leaders” and don’t really view themselves as bosses. Most don’t need or want a lunch or gift, but greatly appreciate their employees recognizing their efforts.
- Finally, maybe we should rename “Boss’s Day” to “Employee Appreciation Day” after all, bosses are employees too!
