A New Purpose in Life
October 1, 2014 Senior Services, Training, Workforce 1

Wendy was out of work for six years prior to coming to National Able Network in May 2014. She was enrolled in the Senior Community Service Employment Program (SCSEP) to enhance her employable skills through working in Able’s call center. Wendy also participated in Job Readiness Training workshops which helped her adjust her resume and cover letter, learn more about online job applications, and prepared her for job interviews. Despite not being in a professional work environment for the past six years, Wendy demonstrated that she was a quick learner by successfully picking up tasks and projects in the call center.
Prior to enrolling in SCSEP, Wendy began feeling depressed and felt as if her employable skills were going to waste. However, after coming to Able, Wendy stated that working and training in the call center has “given [her] a purpose in life” and she now “has something to do every day, something that [she] enjoys.”
While working in the call center, Wendy informed Able’ SCSEP staff that she was living without gas in her apartment for more than three years due to an unpaid bill. To alleviate Wendy’s situation, Able called upon its partner agency, the Legal Assistance Foundation of Chicago, to assist Wendy in paying her overdue bill. With the assistance of the Legal Assistance Foundation and Able, Wendy had her gas bill paid in full. After three years of having to prepare fast food and processed meals on a hot plate or in the microwave, she is now able to cook and bake healthy food for her family again!
Wendy said that the assistance from the Legal Assistance Foundation was the second best thing that has happened to her – the first being coming to Able and enrolling in SCSEP!
“Words cannot express how I feel. It just made me feel so good to know that there are people out there that care and can help others.”
Wendy is continuing her work in Able’ call center. Eventually she would like to continue her education and earn a degree in Psychology. Wendy’s overall employment goal is to work in a Social Services job that helps people – similar to the work we do at Able!
Wendy would be a great addition to any team! If you are interested in hiring Wendy, please contact National Able Network at 855.994.8300
