Networking via MeetUp.com: Using the Computer to Get Away from the Computer

Networking. Some people love it, others cringe at the thought and wish there was an easier way to get to know people. The truth of the matter is, more and more individuals are becoming employed thanks to active networking. Remember the old saying, “It’s not what you know, but who you know.” It still rings true today in many ways.
When I relocated to Illinois in 2010, I was unemployed and knew no one – it was not the best of times. I decided I had to do something to keep myself busy and find work as soon as possible. Surfing the web late one night, I came across a website that stated, “What if you could use the internet to get away from the internet?” I clicked on the link www.meetup.com. What I discovered from that one click was that people all over the world were networking and I was missing out! I also discovered that I didn’t have to join networking groups that were specifically for my occupation, but I could find same-minded individuals with similar interests to get out of the house and do things with. Having group topics such as Career & Business, Support, Language and Ethnic Identity, Socializing, Health & Wellbeing, Singles, Games, Fitness, Education & Learning – the list goes on and on – I realized I could go out and meet people, network, and have fun at the same time! It was amazing to me. This international phenomena was happening, and where was I? I was shyly sitting behind a computer screen waiting to see if someone accepted my friend request. At that moment I knew my networking approach had to change.
With nearly 16 million members, 142,319 Meetup groups in 196 countries, chances are you’ll find a group you can relate to. Members are people you can talk to, people who may have job leads in their company or know someone who does – what’s better than that?! Whether you’re interested in joining an existing Meetup group in your area, or would like to start your own, I encourage you to empower yourself by changing up your networking routine. Chances are you’ll make new friends and meet professionals who could be potential links to a future career. Go ahead, get online and connect – then get out of the house and meet up with people like you!
