It’s Never Too Late to Train for Your Dream Job

Have you ever built a computer? Gloria Cutts has. In fact, that’s how she became interested in working in the technology industry. At the time, she couldn’t afford to buy a computer for her son, so she decided to buy the parts separately (for less money) and assemble the machine on her own.
Originally, Gloria was studying to become a nurse. However, she decided to change her major due to her knack for technology. Gloria went on to earn her Bachelor’s Degree and Master’s Degree in Computer Science from Governors State University. After earning her Master’s Degree, Gloria began working for Chicago Public Schools, training the teachers how to use the computers and other new technology.
Gloria was laid off and had been out of work for three years when she learned about IT Career Lab from a friend who saw a flyer at the Skokie Public Library. Gloria wanted to get back into the technology industry, but she knew that her previous education was outdated and not enough to land her a technology job.
She began working with National Able Network Career Coach, Shawn McKenzie at the Chicago Workforce Center in Pilsen and began class in January 2014. During Gloria’s second week of class, she became very intimidated by the curriculum being taught and considered quitting. But with the encouragement and support of IT Career Lab Program Manager, Donna Claxton, she was inspired to keep going.
“I told myself I could do this. I studied diligently. I took notecards with me everywhere I went so I could study wherever I was.”
Gloria earned all three of her certifications on the first attempt and is very happy that she stuck with IT Career Lab and never gave up. She even took advantage of National Able Network’s Job Readiness Training program to prepare her for her job search!
“Everyone is very nice and friendly. They want to help you succeed,” said Gloria. “Now I am looking forward to a good job!”

Congratulations, Gloria!
