Top 5 LinkedIn Tips for Job Seekers
March 11, 2014 Uncategorized, Workforce 0

LinkedIn operates the world’s largest professional network, with more than 277 million members and over 3 million companies. Networking is one of the key ingredients to a successful job search, and now more than ever this ingredient includes networking online. Having a social media presence, especially on LinkedIn, will help you excel in the art of virtual networking, and taking the time to stick to these 5 simple tips will increase your chances of being seen by the right people and getting noticed by employers.
1) Have a (professional) profile picture:
LinkedIn profiles with photos get 50-70% more views than profiles without. That’s a significant jump! As a job seeker, you want people to see your profile as a way to gain a sense of who you are and what you’re looking for as a person, as well as a place to find your work experience. (Tips for a great LinkedIn photo: Use a current photo of yourself with a neutral background, wear work-friendly attire, and smile!)
2) Your headline is key:
A clear and concise LinkedIn headline is a beautiful thing. Your headline will be one of the first things noticed on your profile (after your profile photo, of course). It should feature two things a) what exactly you’re looking for in a career and b) past experience. Be direct and clear with both items in your explanation.
3) CONNECT:
Connecting with past and current colleagues and other professional acquaintances is one of the most important aspects of LinkedIn. This virtual networking gives you better chances of finding a lead to an open position in your desired field. The more connections you have, the better!
4) Ask for recommendations:
After making connections, another great way to propel your profile is to ask your connections for recommendations. These recommendations will show up on your public profile for your connections and for potential employers to see. You shouldn’t ask everyone for recommendations, but only those with whom you’ve worked closely. Don’t forget to say Thank You!
5) Join groups:
There are over 1 million groups on LinkedIn! Many groups are industry-specific, which is a great way to connect with professionals that work in your career field of interest. Groups are generally a forum of information including group discussions, promotions and job listings. Find a group that interests you and join!
