Veterans Role in the IT Industry
March 10, 2014 IT Career Lab, Veterans Forward 0

The IT Career Lab actively welcomes and strives for a student body that includes different backgrounds and viewpoints, whether based upon gender, race or ethnicity, geography, or political philosophies.
Veterans account for a quarter of our IT Career Lab students. Our curriculum compliments many of the attributes that have made veterans successful in their military careers. Student veterans often have a profound appreciation for education. They are emotionally mature, goal-oriented, mission-driven, experienced leaders. They work tirelessly to achieve their objectives and look for ways to make meaningful contributions. Veterans are the kind of role models we need on our campuses, and graduating to lives of fulfillment in our workforce.
The IT Career Lab has partnered with many local and state veterans organizations like the Veterans Forward program, to assist veterans looking pursue a career in Information Technology. These partnerships have help inform vets how to translate their military skills into classroom. That along with obtaining our global certifications in CompTIA and Cisco makes them very marketable in today’s job market.
The greatest misperception is that all student veterans fit into a common stereotype. Not all veterans have PTSD or a disability. Some will have no trouble with the transition to higher education, and some will be our very best students—and it is that fact that makes working with student veterans so rewarding.
When we provide our student veterans with the opportunity for an extraordinary education, we enhance the learning experiences of the entire academic community.
