Victor Bosque worked as a mechanical repair technician since he was 16 years old. As a technician, Victor had many responsibilities ranging across four states (Indiana, Illinois, Michigan and Wisconsin), which caused him to drive up to four thousand miles per month! After 20 years of working in this position, Victor finally decided it was time for a change. In his search for other career options, Victor attended a networking seminar to expand his professional network. While at the seminar, Victor saw IT Career Lab’s booth. He had always been interested in technology and electronics, and he figured it was worth investigating. After speaking with IT Career Lab Account Manager Jonathan Kimmel, Victor felt it was time to make a change. “Other jobs were about me making an income, but I wanted a career,” says Victor.
Soon after the seminar, Victor left his job to pursue two IT certifications through IT Career Lab, with funding assistance through the Workforce Innovation Opportunity Act (WIOA). Victor went on to earn his Cisco Certified Entry Networking Technician (CCENT) and his Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA) in just 20 weeks!
After earning his two certifications, Victor began an IT internship at a local non-profit. Victor loved this internship so much, that he even volunteered on his days off! Soon after starting his internship, Victor was offered a full time management position!
“Where I am now, I owe to Jonathan,” said Victor. Victor’s advice to individuals looking to upgrade their careers is to stay in school. “That was one of the biggest mistakes [I made]. I dropped out of high school and my entire life has been a struggle because of my lack of education. When I got older, I got my GED and things were a little bit better, but it was still hard. I was so glad I was able to get involved and get my certifications. National Able Network to me was a godsend.”
