Jacqueline Whalum-Clay had a successful career as an Equal Employment Officer in the rail industry when she was laid off. Even with 25 years of experience working in Human Resources, Jacqueline was having difficulty finding her next career path. She attended a local job fair for some additional assistance and discovered National Able Network. With encouragement from Program Manager, Gabrielle Caverl-McNeal, Jacqueline came to Able hoping to enhance her job search: “I worked in a specialty area and there’s not a lot of opportunities out there, so I was looking for job leads and any advice I could get!”
Jacqueline enrolled in the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act and began working with Career Coach, Rocio Montoya. Rocio introduced Jacqueline to a Job Search Work Team, where she was able to connect and network with fellow job seekers. Through her Job Search Work Team and job readiness workshops,
Jacqueline learned how to target her job search, organize her employment plan, and even improve her social media presence! Jacqueline enjoyed the workshops she attended, as well as the advice and support she received from other job seekers in similar situations: “We had a lot in common and were close in age. I think that helped a lot.”
Jacqueline put her updated skills to the test when she conducted her own independent job search, finding and researching a company she thought would enjoy working for: “I did my research and I did my homework to find something I would enjoy.” Her research paid off; Jacqueline found a career as an Employee Relations Advisor, helping a Human Resources department ensure that everyone in the company is able to do their jobs effectively.
Jacqueline is grateful to Able’s staff for the help and support “They were very patient and encouraging. When you don’t have a job, it’s good to know that there are people out there that are so helpful!” Jacqueline’s advice to other job seekers like her is to “look outside your comfort zone, there are a lot of opportunities available, you may need to shift or stretch yourself, and don’t be afraid!”
